Where do I find my tax ID number?

A helpful guide outlining various ways to locate your organization's Employee Identification Number (EIN) using IRS and internal business records.

Whether you’re a nonprofit or for-profit organization, you might need to reference your Employee Identification Number (EIN) – also known as a business tax number – as you configure your RevEngine account. This nine-digit number is like a social security number for your business: it’s how the IRS identifies you when you file taxes or open a business bank account.

How to find your EIN

If you’re a new organization that’s just getting incorporated as a business, your correspondence with the IRS will tell you your EIN.

  1. When the IRS grants your EIN request, they’ll send you an EIN confirmation letter. Your EIN should be in the top right-hand corner. If you applied for nonprofit determination from the IRS, your EIN will be on the letter confirming your tax-exempt status.

Other ways to find your EIN

If you don’t have those records handy, you can reference other documents where your EIN has likely been recorded:

  1. Payroll records, including the 1099 forms you issue to contractors
  2. Your old federal tax returns
  3. Business licenses and/or permits that you filed with state and local officials
  4. Statements from a business bank account
  5. Old business loan applications

If you’re a nonprofit organization, you can also look up your EIN in this free database.

If you still can’t find your EIN, call the IRS Business and Speciality Tax line. Budget some time to wait on hold and be prepared to answer questions to confirm your identity – the IRS will want to verify that you’re one of the proprietors who’s authorized to retrieve the tax number.
