Product Demo: Managing Layout Width and Sidebars
Learn how to customize site width and sidebars. Adjust global settings or override them at the page and block level for a unique layout.
You can find the width options under Site Options > Layout > Global. Here, you have three different options for the width:
- Narrow width: 760 pixels.
- Wide width: 1200 pixels.
- Full width: The full width of the page.
In this same section, you also have the option of displaying your sidebar on the left, on the right, or not displaying a sidebar at all.
Under Layout > Page, you will find similar settings for your container and sidebar that will apply to all pages.
Under Blog, you have those same choices to customize your posts and category pages.
The Homepage > Layout allows you to select different settings specifically for your homepage. This is useful if, for example, you want no sidebar on the homepage but want one on the rest of your pages and posts. You can also set a different width for the homepage that doesn't apply elsewhere.
After selecting your global settings, remember you can override the width at the individual page level. For instance, on a specific page, you can go into Layout Settings and select between the narrow, wide, or full container. You don't have to do this for every page; it is only if you want to override a global setting for a specific instance.
The width you select is inclusive of the sidebar. For example, if you select a narrow width with a right sidebar, the total width remains 760 pixels.
Some blocks can also override global or page settings. Currently, these include:
- Featured Post block.
- Latest Post block.
- About Us block.
- Progress Bar block.
- Certain core WordPress blocks, such as galleries.
To override settings at the block level, click the block and choose from three options:
- None: Follows the global or page settings by default.
- Wide width.
- Full width.
This allows you to have a page that primarily follows a narrow width while specific elements, like a featured post or latest post block, stretch to a wider or full-page width.
