Setting Up and Using Post to Newsletter

Learn how to use the Post to Newsletter feature to automatically turn your site's posts into email campaigns with this step-by-step guide.

The Post to Newsletter feature allows you to automatically turn your site's posts into email campaigns for your subscribers. Follow this step-by-step guide to set up your template, configure your integrations, and send your first newsletter.

Step 1: Create Your Newsletter Template

Before you can send a post as a newsletter, you need to create a base template with a specific merge tag so the system knows where to insert your content.

  1. Navigate to Email > Campaigns > Regular Campaigns > My Templates.
  2. Click the plus sign (+) in the upper right-hand corner to create a new template.
  3. Build your template structure. It must include:
    • A Header and a Footer.
    • A Row containing a Paragraph block.
  4. Click into the Paragraph block and add the following mandatory merge tag exactly as shown: [INCLUDE=INDIE_EMAIL_CONTENT_URL]
  5. Important: Before clicking Save and Close, look at your browser's URL bar. Locate the 6-digit template ID number positioned between the words template and edit. Copy this number.
  6. Click Save and Close.

Step 2: Enable the Integration

Next, you need to link your newly created template to your global site settings.

  1. Go to Site Options > Integrations > Indie Email.
  2. Toggle on the Post to Newsletter feature.
  3. Paste your 6-digit template ID into the designated field below the toggle.
  4. Click Save Changes.

⚠️ Note on Errors: If you see an error under Global Settings Sender, you must assign a Primary Sender profile before you can proceed with sending newsletters.

Step 3: Create and Configure Your Post

Once your settings are saved, you are ready to draft your post.

  1. Navigate to Post > Add Post and add your content.
  2. In the upper right-hand corner, click the Envelope icon (labelled Indie Email).
  3. Toggle on Enable Newsletter.
    • Note: The email's subject line will automatically pull from your post's title.
  4. Configure your email settings:
    • Featured Image: Toggle on or off depending on your preference.
    • Content Type: Select Full Post (sends the entire article) or Excerpt (sends a snippet).
    • Audience: Select your main mailing list from the dropdown menu.

⚠️ Note on audience: If you wish to send the newsletter to a specific segment, create the email as a draft and send it directly through Indie Email. Check out Indie Email - Creating Campaigns to learn more.

Step 4: Preview, Schedule, or Send

With your post configured, use the Campaign Actions menu to manage your delivery:

  • Preview: Check how your email looks before it goes live.
  • Send/Schedule: Send the newsletter immediately or schedule it for a later date.
  • Update: If you need to make edits after configuring, select Update.
  • Unschedule: Cancel a pending scheduled email by clicking Unschedule.
  • Delete: Remove the email campaign entirely by selecting Delete.

⚠️ Note on Publishing: Publish your post first. Then send your newsletter. Sending a newsletter does not publish your post. Publishing your post does not send your newsletter. Each action must be completed separately.
