How to Set Up RevEngine with a Fiscal Sponsor

A guide explaining fiscal sponsorship benefits and outlining the setup methods to connect a sponsor's Stripe and bank details to RevEngine.

Fiscal sponsorship allows a new nonprofit project to attach to a larger organization, such as a university or community foundation, that has a similar mission and already has nonprofit tax status.

In this article, you will learn how fiscal sponsorship works and how to connect to the RevEngine if you are fiscally sponsored.

Things to know

Here are some key things you should know about becoming a fiscally sponsored organization.

  • Fiscal sponsorship allows organizations to use their sponsor’s non-profit tax status to collect tax-deductible donations and apply for grants.
  • Some organizations pursue fiscal sponsorship as an interim measure as they wait for their own nonprofit status to become official.
  • Some organizations stay fiscally sponsored long-term and allow their sponsor to take care of many of the administrative duties that come with running a nonprofit.

If you are fiscally sponsored by INN, please reach out to us at support@indiegraf.com for assistance.

Indiegraf will create and connect your account to Stripe on your behalf.

About fiscal sponsorship and the RevEngine

You can use the RevEngine to collect contributions from your audience, the revenue will just have to flow to a bank account held by your sponsor organization. This means that you’ll have to coordinate with your sponsor when you connect your RevEngine account to Stripe.

How to set up RevEngine with a fiscal sponsor

There are the four ways your organization can use RevEngine through a fiscal sponsor.

  1. If you’re fiscally sponsored by INN, create a RevEngine account but do not connect Stripe. Just contact us and we will connect INN’s Stripe account on your behalf.
  2. Create a Stripe account that’s linked to your sponsor’s bank account.
    1. Your sponsor will have to provide you with routing information from their bank, and (preferably) with an account that’s exclusively for your use.
  3. Both you and your fiscal sponsor sign up for RevEngine.
    1. Your fiscal sponsor should connect their Stripe account.
    2. When you sign up, do not connect Stripe. Instead, let us know and we will connect the fiscal sponsor’s Stripe account to your RevEngine account.
  4. Create a Stripe account and give the credentials to your sponsor organization so they can link a bank account.

No matter which account connection method you choose, once you link your Stripe account to your RevEngine profile, you’ll be on your way to creating sustainable reader revenue.
