How to Connect to Stripe
A guide to onboarding with Stripe on RevEngine, covering required tax info, creating duplicate vs. new accounts, and verification timelines.
Connecting to Stripe is an important part of onboarding to the RevEngine.
Things to know
- RevEngine uses Stripe as its payment processor. The transactions placed through the RevEngine contribution page will show up in the Contributions section of your RevEngine dashboard.
- You can test some of the RevEngine’s features before you connect to Stripe, or while you wait for Stripe to verify your account.
- You cannot publish a contribution page until you connect to Stripe and it verifies your account.

What you’ll need
To complete your Stripe setup, you’ll need to know:
- Your business tax ID number from the IRS. This article will help if you need help finding it.
- A routing and account number for the bank account where you want to send your contributions.
You will need to create a NEW Stripe account through RevEngine even if you already have a Stripe account, as it is Stripe’s policy to ensure that each connected platform’s activity is kept in distinct accounts.
Already have a Stripe account?
If you log in with Stripe credentials when connecting to the platform, Stripe will offer you the opportunity to quickly create a new account in two ways:
- Using an existing business' information. This will result in a duplicate linked account that needs renaming.
- Creating a separate linked business. This is preferred if you need to provide different business information than what is currently on your account (company address, office number, CEO, tax structure, etc).
Complete the option that best matches your needs. On your Stripe dashboard, your different accounts will be available from the dropdown in the top-left corner, so you can still access your non-RevEngine account.
How to connect during account creation
Ideally, the person who owns the tax ID (the EIN) should be the person who creates the new Stripe account.
After you create a RevEngine account, you will receive a prompt to connect to Stripe.
- Click Connect to Stripe. You will temporarily be redirected to Stripe’s account creation page to complete the process.
- Create a new Stripe account. Stripe will ask you for your phone number and then send you a message for verification.
- Fill out the proceeding questions which include contact information, your EIN, details about your tax structure, business address, phone number, industry (if you need help deciding, you can use publishing or other media), business website, and a product description.
- Verify that you are allowed to represent the business by providing your legal name, email, job title, date of birth, business address, phone number, and the last four digits of the social security number.
- Indicate how you provide products or services
- Add routing information and for your bank, account number.
- Add how you would like Stripe payments to appear on your bank statements
- Review the information you’ve provided to Stripe
- Once you complete the signup forms, Stripe will tell you if there are any errors or missing fields. Complete those. Once Stripe has accepted all of them, you can submit your account details for verification
- After successful account creation, your accounts will be linked and you’ll be redirected to the RevEngine dashboard
It could take up to 24 hours for Stripe to verify your account. During this time, you could still see the Connect to Stripe call-to-action in the right corner of the Engine dashboard. Refresh the page to see if the call to action is still present. If it appears, click Connect Now and you’ll be able to see the state of your verification in Stripe.
In the meantime, you can minimize the Connect to Stripe box and continue building your page. However, you will not be able to publish until your Stripe account is verified. Once your verification is complete, the call-to-action will disappear and the Publish button in the top right will be yellow. At that point, you’ll be able to publish contribution pages.
Discounts
If you are creating a new Stripe account as a nonprofit, you can apply for a discount following your account verification. To learn more: Fee discount for nonprofit organisations : Stripe: Help & Support
Deferring your Stripe connection
After creating your RevEngine account, you will have the choice of connecting to Stripe immediately or doing so later by selecting Connect to Stripe later. If you choose to connect to Stripe later, you can test the features of the RevEngine in your account, but you will not be allowed to publish any contribution page you create.
Note: Deferring your Stripe connection prevents you from enjoying other key features of the Engine such as:
- Analytics
- Payment management
- Data exports
- Self-service contributor portal
