What Stripe actions are supported?

A vital guide on managing Stripe with RevEngine, detailing unsupported data modifications and how contributors can self-manage accounts.

Stripe is the payment processor for RevEngine, so any contributions made to your contribution page will be visible on your Stripe dashboard.

Even though Stripe allows it, you should not modify contact, subscription, transaction, or product data in Stripe.

Doing so may result in errors technicals errors and a loss of revenue.

Please review this information carefully to understand what actions are, and aren’t supported on Stripe. If you are ever unsure, you are always welcome to ask our team at support@indiegraf.com for assistance!

What you should NOT do on Stripe

Our system generally expects data to be identical between Stripe and RevEngine - it doesn’t anticipate discrepancies or support modifications to Stripe records.

Do not:

  • Change a customer’s email in Stripe
  • Change the amount of a subscription in Stripe
  • Change the frequency / cadence of a subscription in Stripe
  • Change the renewal date of a subscription
  • Delete or edit products
  • Delete or edit transactions
  • Delete or edit subscriptions
  • Delete customers or edit their data (e.g do not add payment methods or edit their info)
  • Pause payment collection on a subscription
  • Edit or remove any metadata fields, such as agreed to pay fees

None of these changes will take effect in RevEngine, and they’ll only serve to confuse or two systems and block contributions from being processed.

If you or a contributor are looking to make any of these changes to a subscription, feel free to let us know, but the solution will likely involve canceling the existing subscription and / or coordinating with the contributor on setting up a new payment:

  • Change the frequency / cadence of subscriptions
  • Update a subscription to include / exclude Stripe fees after it was created
  • Change the billing dates on subscriptions
  • Pause subscriptions
  • Schedule subscriptions
  • Schedule future one-time payments

What is supported on Stripe?

These are the actions you can safely take in Stripe without jeopardizing the flow of data to RevEngine or its integrations.

  1. You may cancel a recurring contribution (subscription) using Stripe
  2. You may issue full or partial refunds using Stripe
  3. You can export your payment, subscriptions, and customers using Stripe
  4. You are able to issue and download receipts for any charges you see in Stripe

How contributors can self-manage their support

While there are many restrictions on updating subscriptions using Stripe, your contributors can make many of these changes on their own through their portal.

To provide access to the portal, please follow these instructions. They can use this tool to send themselves receipts, or update their payment method, and cancel their active subscriptions. If you are on our Core or RevEngine + Salesforce plans, your contributors will also be able to update the amounts on your subscriptions.
