How to Use and Manage Comments on Your Website
Engaging with your audience through a comment section is a great way to build community. This guide will walk you through how to enable, manage, and moderate comments on your website.
Enabling or Disabling Comments Site-Wide
To turn the commenting feature on or off for your entire site:
- Navigate to Site Options in the left-hand sidebar.
- Select Integrations.
- Use the toggle switch to turn comments on or off.
Managing Comments at the Post Level
Even if comments are enabled site-wide, you have control over individual posts:
- In the post editor, look at the right sidebar under Post and then Discussion.
- Choose to keep comments Open or Closed for that specific post.
- If a post has no comments: Closing comments will hide the comment section entirely.
- If a post already has comments: Closing comments will keep existing comments visible but will display a "Comments are closed" message and disable the submission form.
Automatic Comment Closing and Spam Prevention
- By default, comments automatically close on posts older than 14 days to help prevent spam.
- This timeframe can be adjusted in your settings.
The Reader Experience
When a reader wants to leave a comment:
- They must provide a name, email address, and their comment.
- They have the option to save their details in their browser for future comments.
- After submitting, readers will see a message stating their comment is "awaiting moderation" along with a preview of their post.
Moderating Comments
To manage the comments submitted by your readers:
- Go to the Comments tab in the left-hand sidebar.
- From this moderation section, you can hover over individual comments to approve, edit, delete, or mark them as spam.
- For multiple comments, use the Bulk Actions menu at the top to approve or delete several items at once.
