How does News Revenue Engine protect against bad actors?

Learn how RevEngine automatically flags and quarantines suspicious contributions to protect your organization from potential fraud.

To preserve the security and stability of RevEngine, we use a service that automatically checks for potentially fraudulent contributions and quarantines them for review.

Quarantined payments are not processed until they are reviewed and approved by our team.

Until approved, quarantined contributions:

  • Are not processed by Stripe
  • Do not appear in your contributions dashboard
  • Do not generate a Slack notification
  • Are not visible in your contributor’s portal
  • Do not appear in downstream systems like Salesforce or Mailchimp

Why are some contributions quarantined?

Certain behaviors may lead to a contribution being flagged as possibly fraudulent and quarantined :

  • A would-be contributor makes many payment attempts in a short period of time for a given email or credit card number
  • Typos in the user’s address, name, or email
  • If contributions are made using emails with invalid / suspect patterns
  • Contributions of extremely high or low amounts

Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and other behaviors may also cause a contribution to be flagged.

What happens if a legitimate contribution gets quarantined?

 We expect that only a small number of your contributions may be incorrectly classified as fraudulent, which is why it's best to monitor for these cases. If a decision is not made on a payment within 72 hours, it’s automatically accepted.

Once a payment is accepted, a receipt email is sent, and the payment appears in both your dashboard and the contributor’s portal. A charge is then created in Stripe, which initiates the payment processing.

Keep in mind that Stripe has its own fraud prevention system. This means a payment might pass RevEngine’s fraud checks but still be flagged and rejected by Stripe as fraudulent.
