Change amounts on recurring contributions
Core and Salesforce plan users can let donors adjust subscription amounts via the RevEngine portal. Avoid manual changes in Stripe to prevent errors.
A lot of friction is removed by providing contributors a way to update the amount of their subscriptions rather than forcing them to cancel and set up a new payment.
This feature is currently reserved for Core and RevEngine + Salesforce users – click here to learn more about our plans.
Contributors use their portal to update subscription amounts
If you are on our Core or RevEngine + Salesforce plans, your contributors can update the amount on any active recurring contributions made on RevEngine by using their portal. To provide them with access to the portal, please share your portal link, which you can find using these steps.

If they’re unfamiliar with this tool, you can pass along a message like this:
Here’s a link to our contributor portal. You don’t need to create an account - you only need to provide the email address that you used to make your contribution. Once you enter that, our system will email you a magic link that you’ll use to access your portal.
This link is just for you and, for security reasons, it will expire 15 minutes after it’s issued. The next time you need to access the portal, you’ll follow the same steps to generate a new magic link.
Once you’re in the portal, you’ll be able to click on your active subscriptions and update the amount by clicking “Change billing details”. When you click “Save”, you will be billed the new amount on your next billing date.
You can also use the portal to view your transaction history, change your payment method, and cancel any of your recurring contributions.

Your supporters will receive an email confirming the changes they made. Emails are also sent whenever contributors change their billing details, cancel their contribution, or use the portal to send themselves a receipt (resend receipts functionality is only available to organizations that send these through RevEngine).

Boost your fundraising with bump-up and recurring campaigns
We recommend setting up bump-up campaigns to prompt contributors to increase their subscription amounts, as well as recurring campaigns to encourage one-time contributors to set up a recurring contribution.
For users on our Core and RevEngine + SF plans, creating a bump-up campaign is as simple as setting up a Mailchimp automation that directs contributors to their portal. Soon, setting up recurring campaigns will be just as easy, as we’re introducing a new feature allowing contributors to switch from one-time giving to monthly or yearly contributions.
To learn more, please see Strategies for bump-up and recurring campaigns.
Amount changes should NOT be made in Stripe
If a contributor wants you to change their contribution amount (if they don’t want to or can’t use the portal), you’ll have to cancel their existing subscription and instruct them to set up a new one with the changed amount. RevEngine does not support updating contribution amounts on behalf of contributors, so we recommend directing these contributors to manage these payments themselves.
If contributors encounter any issues using the portal, let us know!
DO NOT update amounts using your Stripe dashboard – doing so may result in technical errors, corruption of data, and loss of revenue.
Please refer to this document to learn about what changes you can safely make on Stripe. If this is a feature you’d like for our team to support, let us know too!
Other subscriptions changes
If someone wishes to cancel a recurring contribution, they can do so using the portal. If for some reason they cannot login to their portal, it is safe for you to do this for them on Stripe.
Please know that RevEngine does not currently offer any support for these subscription changes (either through Stripe or the portal):
- Change the frequency / cadence of subscriptions
- Update a subscription to include / exclude Stripe fees after it was created
- Change the billing dates on subscriptions
- Pause subscriptions
- Schedule subscriptions
- Schedule future one-time payments
- Changing payments on other systems besides RevEngine (like PayPal)
To fulfill these requests, you will likely need to cancel the subscription and or coordinate with the contributor to set up the desired payment/s.
Coming soon
We’re working on improving contribution management, please expect these changes as part of upcoming RevEngine updates:
Support for contributors to opt-in or opt-out of Stripe fees using their portal
Support for updating giving frequency / cadence through portal
